Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman said that first Pakistan made JF-17 Thunder aircraft would fly in the country’s airspace by end of this year. He made this announcement while addressing the Graduation Ceremony of No 38 Combat Commanders’ Course which was held at Pakistan Air Force Base, Mushaf (Sargodha). In his address to the graduating Combat Commanders, he said, The JF-17 Thunder programme is on track. “We will start production of this aircraft from 30th of this month and Inshallah 1st Made in Pakistan JF-17 aircraft will fly in Pakistan's airspace by end of this year.” “PAF has extensively flown against the militants in Swat as well as in FATA. Application of airpower has brought about tangible results. This is a new type of warfare in which PAF has been participating for the first time during the last one year or so in support of Pakistan Army. We will continue our contribution towards our national security effort as long as it is required.” Referring to the challenges confronted the nation, he said ‘the challenges, both internal and external, that confront us today and our responses to these have to be viewed in the broader perspective of the changes that are shaping the geopolitical landscape of the world. Apart from the traditional hostile adversary, new frontiers of conflict have lately emerged for us in the West and from within. These developments pose a great deal of threat to our national security.” The Chief Guest awarded certificates and trophies to the graduating officers who underwent a strenuous and professionally demanding course. The Chief of the Air Staff Trophy for the best Combat Commander was awarded to Squadron Leader Haider Shahbaz Ali while Air Officer Commanding Air Defence Command Trophy for best Combat Controller was awarded to Squadron Leader Saquib Rehman. Earlier on his arrival, the Chief Guest was received by Air Commodore M Ashfaque Arain, Base Commander PAF Base, Mushaf. The ceremony was attended by Principal Staff Officers and field commanders of Pakistan Air Force.

UPDATE

Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman inaugurated the final assembly work in a ceremony at Kamra. Top military and civilian officials of Pakistan and China attended, senior officers of Chinese company CATIC attended the ceremony. "The project was near to end in 1999 due to sanction imposed on Pakistan after the nuclear tests but in 2001 it was reviewed. The agreement in this respect could not be signed in 2007-08 due to unavailability of funds but Government of China arranged loans on soft installment and the role of CATIC Company in this respect is laudable", Qamar said. The project is supported by China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation for the Chinese side. Each individual aircraft is expected to have a fly-away cost of around US$8-15 million. On 22 January 2008, Pakistan started limited serial production of the aircraft at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra but on Tuesday full-fledged production of JF-17 has been started in PAC after completing testing and avionics evaluation. The JF-17 will replace Pakistan’s MiG-21-derived Chengdu F-7, Nanchang A-5 and Dassault Mirage III/Mirage V aircraft currently in service. JF-17 can be armed with up to 3,629 kg (8,000 lb) of air-to-air and air-to-ground ordnance, as well as other equipment. Pakistan, Rao Qamar said, we have eight JF-17 thunders and soon PAF would complete its squadron of JF-17 jets. The project has two aims one is to ensure national security and second is to strengthen Pakistan Aviation Industry, he said. We would also sell JF-17 thunders to other countries, he said while lauding the role of China in development of PAF. He hoped that the technician of PAF would come out to the expectation of nation by introducing the new technology. No comprise would be made on country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Rao Qamar said. Speaking at the occasion, Vice President CATIC Lei Pay said today is a historic day because dream is going to materialize. At end of this year, assembling and flying testing of 6 JF-17 thunders would be completed, he said. We are facing several challenges but the Chinese Government would continue to collaborate with Pakistan, he said. The project would boost the Sino-Pak friendship, he said. Addressing the ceremony, Chairman PAC Air Marshal Farhat Hussain said total 40 JF-17 thunders would be prepared in Kamra. 12 JF-17 thunders would be prepared by 2010, 15 to 20 by 2011 and after 2010 all the JF-17 would be prepared in Pakistan, he said. 85 percent work with regard to purchase of weapons and parts of JF-17 thunders have been completed and we would be able to complete the project at stimulated time", he said.

What is the induction schedule of JF-17 in PAF? It has been reported that 42 kits will be delivered in 3 years and it'll take Pakistan up to 3 and half years to assemble them. At this rate there will be 50 JF-17 in PAF service by 2012.
Since the dates for AFDP have been shifted from 2015 to 2025 has this also affected the schedule to induct 250 JF-17 by 2015 in PAF?

Can anyone explain a little bit about JF-17.Is it a double seater? if Yes, what use of the double seats in jet fighter and for what purpose.2) what's its speed?3)Can it replace f-16?4) Among modern day jet fighter where he falls. Is it like su-30 and f-22 or modern than that. 5)Is it a defencive or attacker.

To QAMAR:
Single seater multirole. Only type trainer variant is twin seater. Similar to F-16 and will replace Mirage 3 and J-7 in PAF. Cannot be compared to twin engined jets like Su-30 or F-22, those are much bigger and powerful.

According to my information, by the end of this year first JF-17 Thunder squadron will be operational at PAF Base, Peshawar. In the words of now Retired Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mehmood Ahmed, during first year Pakistan will produce 15 aircraft and this number will increase to 30 in a year. By 2010, 60% of the airframe and 80% of the avionics will be indigenously produced by PAC and PAF will get 250 JF-17 Thunders by 2015. Pakistan has already invested USD 600 million in the JF-17 project. Chinese manufacturing facilities will be used to complement the Pakistani facilities in firest few years to meet the urgent requirements of PAF for the JF-17 as they need to replace the old F-7, A-5, Mirage-III, and Mirage-5

Now can you refer to any report that says that 42 kits will be delivered in 3 years and it'll take Pakistan up to 3 and half years to assemble them because I haven’t seen any such report.

To Qamar

The JF-17 Thunder co-development and co-production programme was formally launched in 1998. Major mile-stones of the project for development and production of the aircraft were divided in three stages. The detailed design of the aircraft was finalized in September, 2001 and the first prototype aircraft flew its maiden flight in a record short time of two years. the second prototype flew in April, 2004 and subsequently, two additional flying prototypes of the JF-17 aircraft were also manufactured in the following years to conduct flight testing of JF-17 aircraft. Following the successful progress of flight trails on prototype JF-17 aircraft, eight Small Batch Production aircraft were manufactured in year-2007, which were subjected to extensive flight testing and evaluation in the last two years in Pakistan.

As Anonymous @ June 28, 2009 10:15 AM have said

JF-17 is a light weight fighter jet with medium to advance technology

Currently it is a single seater but a dual seater is being developed for pilot training and attack roles

It is designed to replace the old F-7, A-5, Mirage-III, and Mirage-5 while F-16 will be upgraded in the PAF service to MLU standard that will make them as capable as F-16 block 52+ are (barring the airframe capabilities of new F-16s). Su-30MKI and F-22 are in heavy class while JF-17 is light weight aircraft more in class of Jas-39 and LCA.

The report on delivery of 42 kits comes from this Chinese article:

Its translation is at the end of this page:

Hope you can find a better translation.
This report aside, can you help me with a little math.
How the figure of 250 will be reached even at the rate of 30/year by 2015 and how it will be financed without completely exhausting annual allocation to AFDP.
I dont think China will supply complete jets nor they have comitted yet to provide friendly finance beyond the comitted 42 jets.

GEO pakistan, we need that badly

its is very smilar to f-16,

su 30 is heavy and big, good target

for missiles. j-f 17 stealth is

being researched upon. call it

brother of f-16, highly capable.

To above

You should not over estimated the JF 17 and under estimate SU 30. JF 17 is a capable fighter. Agility wise it is on par with F 16 because PAF specified JF 17 needs to similiar to that jet. Look at the wings and tail planes you will notice the F 16 influence.

Seperately the F 16s MLU and Block 52 will be PAFs main strike force, then J 10 will be deployed by 2014, hopefully with a AESA radar.

i hope china should redesign tail of jf17 and also increase wing area

"i hope china should redesign tail of jf17 and also increase wing area"

actually lockheed can do a better job!!! dah

to asian defnece

can u tell how many jf17 are in pak service

8 jf-17 are in peshawar right now

fully operational, more coming soon

peshawar willl be main base to

keep an eye on afghanistan

Seems it will take 3 years for 42 JF-17 to be assembled after all.
6 by 2009 end

Ghufran Ali Quresh

Welcome back after a long time I guess

Thanks Anonymous @ July 1, 2009 3:25 AM

Nice find it really looks to me that financial position of Pakistan is taking its toll on PAF plans for up gradation
I really appreciate you effort

I think Pakistan will gradually ramp up production in the following way-
6 in 2009
12 in 2010
18 in 2011
24 in 2012 (start of follow on 100 jets)
30 in 2013

This way PAF may have 150 JF-17 in 2015.
It will be intresting to see if PAF remains intrested in JF-17 beyond 2015 or will they switch over to J-10 production.

Also $8-15 million a unit sounds increadibly cheap. How much can we expect follow on 100 jets with western avionics to cost? Dassault is quoting $40 million to upgrade each of IAF Mirage 2000. Has any development work on JF-17 with western avionics started yet? Will it sport the Grifo S7 radar or the selection is yet to be made?

Chinese radar on first batch, impressed PAF more the Grifo S7.

most likely french radar wiil be

chosen in long run i am sure

Sharp looking airplane, good work china

A lot has been said about the JF17, the truth is..... JF17 is already an obscolete aircraft which is technically inferior to the F16 block 52. This does not mean its a bad aircraft, simply 20 years behind, and by the time its upgrades and modifications are in place as with the block 3 version it will be out flown by most modern aircrafts. When you become too country specific as Pakistan vz. India you suffer from tunnel vision. The initial attempt to build a jet fighter of 3/4 generation standards has to be applauded. If I was in PAF planning I'd think about limiting the number of JF17's to 150 - 200 and increasing the number of J10's towards the 150 mark and concentrate on exporting the aircraft. India's LCA would be the rival aircraft with has the same generation fighter qualities akin to the Mirage 2000. Which one is better is hard to say but looking at the stats of the Mirage 2000 its certaily a good aircraft. My hunch is in air to air combat the JF17 will out perform the Tejas/LCA.

well in my opnion jf-17 is a good aircraft but for nothing . i did not see if it had a negative g capability . & other thing tht it would be a fourth gen aircraft where india is going to 5th . I saw the jf-17 project here on net that was a functional but i like the idea . pakistan should go for more advance jet on its on that can hav a longer range more weapon capcity & it should be 5th gen. bcoz its technology who win not the no. with best regard

good going, technology do count but its planing which make you win war
