The air force's MiG-29N jetfighters will be sold off and replaced with new aircraft, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.Several companies abroad had expressed interest to buy the aircraft, he said, adding that the ministry would discuss the matter with the Finance Ministry."There are still matters to be considered such as the price," he told reporters after attending an event here to announce the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2010 exhibition.Malaysia received the delivery of the Russian-made MiG-29N in April 1995.Malaysia had signed the purchase of 18 units the aircraft in June 1994 at the cost of US$380 million while the package which included training and spare parts cost US$1.6 billion.Ahmad Zahid the MiG-29N would be replaced with interceptors with the latest technologies to strengthen the air force's capabilities. He also said that the government was taking steps to replace the armed forces' ageing assets in stages. On foreign newswire reports that a North Korean vessel, suspected of carrying weapons and banned cargoes, was heading towards the Strait of Melaka, Ahmad Zahid said the Malaysian authorities were gathering intelligence on the matter.Reports said that the cargo ship, Kang Nam, carrying the North Korean flag, was chugging towards the Strait of Melaka. The ship was reported to be heading for Thilawa port in Myanmar and said to be carrying low technology weapons but still dangerous compared to other conventional weapons.

probably india can buy those mig29 these have air refuelling and just upgrade them cuz indain mig29 upgrade is already underway
these migs can be bought for 100 million which is not bad
because indian mig29 are older than malaysian mi29 and if indian mig29 to be used till 2030 then these malaysian mig29 can be used to recover recent crashes
and after upgrade these mig29 will have PGM and BVR capability
this is my tought
because acquiring used mirage2000
will cost as much as 50 million for each mirage but these mig29 are way cheaper than m2000
just need to upgrade them
f-16 is highly capable fighter
ask israelis, forget about mig29
IAF doesn't operate F-16 as yet. Unless it wins MMRCA contest no F-16 will be bought. Just look at how much Malaysia had to spend on the package which included training and spare parts. These Malaysian Mig-29 can sure agument our existing fleet and make up for attritions.
But I am not sure if IAF has ever bought second hand fighters.
It really depends on the condition of these aircraft. Malaysia is not exactly a top notch arms procurer so if they are actually phasing these AC out and spend money on new procurements, that might indicate that these Mig-29 are just finished. Its not exactly uncommon for this type. Their Migs were bought in 1995 or so, that means its basically a soviet era AC. The engines are gone for sure, the rest might just not be worth the effort.
Malaysian Mig-29 are in a pretty good condition. They had acquired quite a comprehensive package including spares. Morover IAF had trained Malaysian Air Force to operate these jets, so IAF is already geared to absorbe them.
These jets will be replaced by Su-30 MKM of which India is a co-producer. Hence there will be direct offsets for us if Malaysia finds a buyer for these Mig-29.
mig 29 though a good fighter it is plagued by a short service life as well as smoky engines.
All Mig-29 in IAF service are to get new RD-33-3 engines and a life extension as part of ongoing MLU package.
Since we are going to retain 3 Mig-29 squadrons these Malaysian Migs can help these squadrons rebuilt their war reserves lost to attritions over the years. Thus no new squadron needs to be planned to accomodate them. Its just about optimising the efficiency of the squadrons we already have.

mig 29 though a good fighter it is plagued by a short service life as well as smoky engines.
----------------------------------\
IAF going to use mig29 till 2030 means 4 years of life and its not short
and for smoky engines read what i said in upper most comment indian mig29 upgrade is underway and this includes new non smoky rd33-3 engines and other avionics
upgraded mig29 will have options of
el/m 2060p SAR pod one on mki
Elbit Systems' Condor-2 LOROP pod
el/m 8222 jammer
litneing 2 pod
SIVA POD
buddy refuelling pod
all these options i mentioned are already installed on mki so it would not be hard to install thses on mig29
and this makes upgraded mi29 top notch in all aspects
this is nonsense! it can still be operated. if IAF can upgrade their MiG 29 to new level, why can't RMAF?? if they phase out Mig29N, then the RMAF will only have 2 squadrons of fighter aircraft.. its far from enough.. buying a new MRCA squadron would take years to make. probably not in the next 5 years. Ministry of Defense are making a big mistakes...its better to phase out F5E then the MiGs.F5s are older then the MiGs. just couldn't understand the rational of MOD decision.
