India makes payments to French firm to upgrade Mirage fleet

India has started making payments to French defence major Dassault Aviation for upgrading its fleet of Mirage 2000 aircraft under a deal worth $2.4 billion. The Indian government has started making payments for the deal to upgrade the Mirage aircraft, sources said.

The first batch of the country's indigenously developed light combat aircraft (LCA) "Tejas" was likely to be handed over to the Indian Air Force by next year, a senior Aeronautical Development Agency official said today. "As far as LCA is concerned, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is the prime agency. Last year they have started production. Of the 80 choppers ordered earlier, Defence Minister AK Antony formally inducted their first batch on Friday. Of the 71 helicopters to be ordered, 59 would be provided to the IAF for replacing its old Mi-8 and Mi-17IV choppers and six would be given to the Border Security Force.

The Price Negotiation Committee (PNC), which was set up late 2010 after GE had nipped Eurojet to become the lowest bidder, has recently finalised the deal after having surpassed all the hurdles before it and the file is now expected to go to the CCS anytime.
