IDEX 2009 :Camcopter demonstrates land and sea capability

Schiebel’s Camcopter S-100 vertical take-off unmanned air system (VTUAS) has recently been undertaking a wide-ranging series of demonstrations. In December, the vehicle spent four days with the Austrian Army at its Allentsteig range near Vienna. During these operations it was used in a field exercise, and demonstrated high-altitude flights up to 6,000m.

In the autumn, the Camcopter spent two weeks in the very different environment of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, operating at sea in a demonstration to the French Navy. In the first phase, the VTUAS operated from a towed barge in the Atlantic, operating in Sea States of up to 3, with 8° of deck pitch and roll. It was then deployed to the frigate Montcalm in the Mediterranean.

The French demonstration followed a series of integration trials aboard the K130 corvettes of the German Navy, a demonstration aboard a Type 21 frigate of the Pakistan Navy, and another campaign on the Spanish Guardia Civil’s Rio Miño.

Schiebel’s S-100 Camcopter VTUAS typically carries a 25kg payload for six hours, with a maximum payload of 50kg, and has been tested with the Thales UK Lightweight Multirole Missile. Its 55hp rotary engine gives a dash speed of 120kts. Take-off and landing are autonomous. Schiebel can be found in the Austrian Pavilion in Hall 12, Stand B03.
