Indian Army is all set to induct 124 Arjun tanks

After repeated trials and a huge budget overrun, a total of 124 Arjun Main Battle Tanks (MBT) are all set to be inducted into the armoury of the Indian Army by April next year, said Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientist and chief controller (R&D) Dr W Selvamurthy.

He was speaking at the valedictory ceremony of the 13th Post Induction Training School (POINTS-13) programme held at the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) here on Monday.

Outlining the contribution of the DRDO in shaping various aspects of the weaponry of the Indian armed forces, he said, “The Arjun MBT is a state-of-the-art battle tank designed and developed by the Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE), Avadi in Tamil Nadu. Besides, the ordered tanks are in various stages of production at the moment and would be inducted in a phased manner.”

Urging new scientists to undertake path breaking research in the defence sector, Dr Selvemurthy said, “You need to go for out-of-the-box thinking to scale new heights in defence research and innovation. As the vision of the DRDO is to empower India with superior technology in the field of strategic defence, which the nation has seen from time to time.”

Delivering the valedictory address, chief guest and director, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Professor Samir K Brahmachari said that defence scientists should develop technologies that can be used for civilian purpose.

He further said, “Scientists in India are categorised as strategic scientists and those for civilian applications. Hence, how to utilise strategic technology for civilian purpose would be a challenge for the budding DRDO scientists.” He said that DRDO has risen on several occasions by providing vital expertise in the field of ballistic missiles and propellant technology, which speaks volumes about the contribution it made in the cause of nation building.

Indian Army has been reluctant in the past to accept and deploy these tanks due to the reason that they failed to find any suitable role for these bulky machines. Now it looks like they have probably found a use case. Then why only 124 tanks are being inducted while thousands of foreign origon tanks are being inducted. Why Indian Army is wasting the resources on foreign made machines. Do they love to buy from external sources due to some reason? Any justification?

Arjun tanks have taken a long time, and they were designed long back so they are not made for modern warfare, and most importantly they failed most of the critical parameters during army tests.its a failed tank as far as indian army is considered as T-90 is being licence produced.

The Indian Arjun certainly looks like a more complete effort than the Iranian Zulfiqar. However, it appears to suffer from not entirely dissimilar limitations.

I doubt the Iranians are actually fielding the Zulfiqar. The Indians appear to be fielding their Arjun as a matter of self-prestige. Good luck to them with that.

waste of money, brain power,

buy russian tanks, it will not

work against al-khalid and al-zarar

Is this tank 58 T in weight? What is its weight-to-tjhrrust ratio? Does it have mobility issues in wet areas or in desert? The question is why the Indian army does not like it? Given the long development time and German engines installed in Arjun, it does not make sense why they do not like it. May be Indian general want to make money in the process of getting Russian tanks. Indians are infamous the world over in getting the kickbacks.

sorry guys seems like you are too ignorant abt Arjun MBT (or fallen for the anti-Arjun propaganda)

Read this:
http://smarterone.blogspot.com/2009/03/arjun-mbt-will-controversy-end.html
hope it will clear most of (or maybe all) yer doubts.

One of the CORPORALS observing ARJUN tank reported to the (JCO)of his Pakistani intelligence outfit reports.(Saab) I do not understand this mechine ,,,,,,,I am observing it for past three nights If you take my opnion tell the boss this thing Arjun seems to me more of a Three Leged Reptile It is behaving just like Vickers Vajiyanta,,,No mobility the crew is constantly trying to cool its water body.
Three or four Sikhs are called on every hour to push its Gun to a 90 digree position manually by pushing it with an ARV Jib

They the (INDIANS) can use this tank as an Anti tank gun prepositioning it in a infantry blocking position .
Saab I am worried of the crew they are not getting a good deal
