At the request of the government of northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the PLA Air Force (PLAAF) has launched the first air bombing mission to aid the local government in preventing an ice-jam flood in the Yellow River. Ice-jams in the Yellow River often occur in spring and the situation in the Inner Mongolian section of the river is typically the most severe. The up stream of the Yellow River often thaws earlier than the down stream, which causes a flood peak in the down stream. When it comes to Inner Mongolian segment, the ice-jam later forms into an ice dam together with the un-thawed ice layers. As a result, the water level of the Yellow River rises rapidly and such disasters as flooding occur when the situation is serious.
