Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean signed the Singapore-Vietnam Defence Cooperation Agreement with Vietnam's Minister of National Defence General Phung Quang Thanh in Vietnam this afternoon.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean and Vietnam's Minister of National Defence General (GEN) Phung Quang Thanh signed the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Singapore and the Ministry of National Defence of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, at the Vietnam Ministry of National Defence this afternoon. Mr Teo also called on GEN Thanh before the DCA signing ceremony.
During the meeting, Mr Teo and GEN Thanh had an exchange of views on bilateral defence cooperation, regional security developments and the regional security architecture.
The signing of the DCA at the ministerial level marks a significant milestone in the warm and growing defence relationship between both countries, and reflects their commitment towards enhancing bilateral defence ties through closer defence cooperation.
Mr Teo, who is in Vietnam for an official visit from 7 to 10 September 2009, will call on Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, and Chairman of Commission of Inspection Nguyen Van Chi. As part of his visit, Mr Teo will deliver a speech at the National Defence College of the Ministry of National Defence. Mr Teo will also visit the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) units and historic battle sites at Dien Bien Phu, where he will meet with the Chairman of the People’s Committee of Dien Bien Province, Dinh Tien Dung.
