Dassault in talks with Emirates over Rafale jets

Dassault Aviation is in talks with the United Arab Emirates over a possible order for its Rafale fighter jets, the company said on Saturday, in what would be the first sale of the aircraft to a foreign buyer.Newspaper Le Parisien reported earlier on Saturday that France was finalising the sale of 60 Rafale jets in a deal worth 6-8 billion euros ($8-11 billion). The paper said President Nicolas Sarkozy would personally push the issue in a visit on Monday and Tuesday to Abu Dhabi.Dassault declined to confirm the figures and said an agreement may be reached this year."There are negotiations with the Emirates but it will still take a while. We aren't close to finalising a contract in the next few days," a spokesman for Dassault said, adding that the talks were extremely complex. Le Parisien said the contract under negotiation would cover several years. Citing a source close to the negotiations, it said the Rafale, which was developed years ago, would have to be upgraded to convince the buyers. Sarkozy's office said ties between the governments, the manufacturers of the Rafale and the UAE air force had deepened since the Gulf Arab state publicly announced its interest in the Rafale last year."Things are progressing in a normal fashion," the president's office said.France has so far failed to find a foreign buyer for the Rafale jet. It is France's most sophisticated combat aircraft, combining both fighter and bomber roles, but it has lost out to rivals offering cheaper, less high-tech models.

Update:
The UAE and France are continuing negotiations on UAE’s potential purchase of French Rafale fighter planes, the UAE’s foreign minister said on Monday. “It will take a bit more time” to complete the talks, Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahayan told AFP ahead of French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s visit to the UAE for talks on bilateral military ties.

isn't 8-11 billion US dollars for jsut 60 rafale too much

su30,35 can be cheaper option and provide more capability than rafale

su30/35 is very large for a fighter and hence a easy target for missiles, aircaft that are small are difficult to see and shoot down

all semi stealthy when carry external weapons then its worth to think how stealthy they are

moreover semi stelthy can't hide from irbis e,amsar radars

Su-30 and Su-35 are very good options but don’t provide the level of integration and compatibility with existing weapons and training and as pankaj there is huge difference between Rafale and Su30 and both aircraft carries weapons externally that add to the RCS.

Any ways UAE Rafale deal includes trading back of Mirage-2000-9,UAE Rafale will be able to weapons of UAE Mirage-2000-9 and French base in UAE so Su-30 is out of question

Not to forget the fact that if UAE wanted to have a heavy weight aircraft in class of Su-30 they can always ask for the semi stealthy F-15SE which will be able to use same weapons and power plant as their F-16E/F

Now to the cost section of the questions

Well what you are taking into account is only initial procurement costs which incase of Su-30 and Su-35 is lower, but what about total life-cycle costs? How many more spare parts have to be bought for supporting the life-cycles of Su-30?I am sure that you know that Rafael is far more reliable in term of maintaince intensive aircrafts like Su-30 and combine that with the fact that there will always be problems with spare parts supply and capability promised and capability delivered within specified time period.

to asin defence

i know UAE is more bent towrds west

operating cost of su30 is more close to f15 operating cost

su30 and su35 aren't that bad in operation and reliability to su series aircraft is proven

which aircraft has more indurance on internal fuel ,irbis e has twice the range of rbe2 aesa
which aircraft can carry more missiles in one go

which ,missile is better r77 or mica,r77 cost 30% less and has much better engagement range

and get this russian spares cost 3 times less than rafale spares would cost

on very long range missions su30 fitted with irbis e do the work of 2 rafales alone

if russian engines have less life hours so what
and mid life upgrade of russian jets always
cheaper than french aircrft as in case of mig29 and mirage 2000 upgrade cost and ther are new engines on mig29 and still mig29 upgrade cost 24 million less

Su-30 and combine that with the fact that there will always be problems with spare parts supply and capability promised and capability delivered within specified time period.
--------------------------------------------
capability promised and cpability delivered is subjected to evaluations being done by buyer
and if he is satisfied then what else remaining

as i have already posted india flies mig21 almost 250 hours a year so compared to this su30 series is far more reliable

You can see many incidents where Russians are not following the contact clauses about the delivery schedules, cost increases and quality related problems. And just because some buyer is satisfied that in most of its history relied on Russians is a different matter then a buyer that is looking for a product to be as good as western standards. How many times you hear about the western engines related problems as compared to the RD-33 of Mig-29. Lastly Rafale will be equipped with the Meteor BVRAAM by the time it comes in service with UAE AF and UAE AF will be able to use all the weapons of mirage-2000-9

i know no pro western country will buy russkie stuff even if it beats western hardware

when did america followed contract clauses, its driven by own interests, they stop spares whenver they feel their interests are threatened, just see venezuela, indonesia, iran no spares for f16,18,14 thats why they bought su30

mig29 engine was really bad so what its been fixed now

and what are western standards

now see how muc h was spent on f22 development
70 billion, how much is expected for pak fa around 20 billion this is the difference

and no one in europe developing 5 gen aircraft

as for your info there will be russian and amrircan ramjet missiles in market as well

Let’s not compare the projects that yet to be tested or take off with those which are in service are close to completing their tests

As for as Iran etc are concerned you can be seriously asking USA to sell them parts when these countries are hostile to them and no such clause existed so USA haven’t broken anything
Compare the RD-33 and AL-31 MTBO with western aircrafts before talking about equal quality

'French jets deal soon'

A deal for the sale of French fighter jets to the UAE is likely to be finalised soon, a source close to the office of French President Nicolas Sarkozy revealed yesterday.

The source, speaking to Emirates Business on a condition of anonymity, said there had been encouraging progress over the sale of the twin-engine Rafael fighters.

The initial deal involves between 60 and 100 jets. The new aircraft will replace the 60 French Mirage planes currently used by the UAE Air Force.

"The deal is on track as there has been some progress and we could hear the good news very soon," he added.

"I cannot say when exactly the deal will be signed but it is likely to be very soon. The contract will be worth up to $18 billion (Dh66.2bn)."

Another official accompanying the French delegation said the deal could be signed during next month's Paris Air Show. As part of the arrangement France would take back the Mirage fighters.

France yesterday renewed its 1995 defence deal with the UAE. The two sides signed a new treaty at the Emirates Palace hotel in the presence of President Sarkozy and General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and defence officials from the two countries.

i will also compare the price as well if i do this in future that russian engines cost 4 times less so one can buy 4 engiens at the rpice of one western engine
