A Sea Harrier crashed off the Goa coast on Friday morning, killing lieutenant commander Saurav Saxena, 31, who was piloting the plane. The aircraft crashed around 15 nautical miles west of Vasco at 11.57 am, 42 minutes after take-off. Navy officials say the British-made Sea Harrier was on a routine exercise mission along with a missile vessel, when a distress call was made to the air traffic controller.
The navy undertook search operations around the crash site and managed to retrieve the pilot’s body and parts of the wreckage. Navy officials said a court of inquiry has been ordered into the incident. Incidentally, chief of naval staff admiral Sureesh Mehta was on a farewell tour of Goa on Friday
