Indian Air Force to Buy Additional 42 Sukhoi-30 MKI Fighters

The Cabinet Committee on Security earlier this month quietly cleared one of the biggest defence orders of recent times. The almost Rs 15,000 crore order for an additional 42 Sukhoi-30 MKI fighters would add up the total number of these modern Russian fighters for Indian Air Force to 272. When the entire Sukhoi-30 MKIs, including the 42, are delivered to IAF by around 2018, it would become the single largest type of fighters in service, marking a huge technological transition from the dominance of MIG-21 fighters today.

Awesome - 272 is a beautiful number: it will effectively make India the hub of the advanced Flanker. (For comparison, USAF has 334 F15E.)

Correction:

USAF has 223 Strike Eagles in operation.

Rs 15,000 crore for 42 Su30MKI,

making it roughly $77 million per Sukhoi at current exchange rate.

India is stupid.

They want to invest in the MRCA, when they can just buy large quantities of the Su30Mki.

They should limit their platforms and just keep 2 or 3 at most.

They want Mig 29s, Mirage 2000's, MRCA's, PAK-FA's, MCA's, LCA's, and god know what else.

I guess the foolish Indians don't understand these tenders are only for stuffing the politicians pockets and not for defence.

They only need 20 MKIs to take care of all of Pakistan offensive force.

True. If the Su30mki costs $77m each (not bad fora jet that capable), why consider something less capable yet costs just about the same? The per copy cost of low-end/MiG21-replacement should be no more than $50m.

Perhaps MRCA is merely India's way to see what the world's brightest has to offer. Think about it, every matured airframe designing and manufacturing company (Mikoyan, Lockheed, Boeing, EADS, Dassault, Saab) is in the game.

3-4 types? PAK FA, Su30MKI, MiG35/MiG29K? Between the first two alone, there's >300 top-notched long-ranged airframes already. Crazy.

in fear of pakistan acquiring 18 f16 they ordered 42 sukhoi's a good PAKISTAN's policy to keep india busy.

zaidi72 wow man only a madarasa educated fellow can say something like that keep it up

Actually Pakis are slumdogs.

Asias Largest slum is located in Lahore Pakistan.

Google It

It is said that EuroFighter has a RCS of 1 square metre whereas:

"This compares with the estimated RCS of the Rafale of 2 square metres, the 20 square metres of the Su-30MKI, the 1 square metre of the Su-35BM."

The numbers somehow seems odd to me. Can they be verified? Appreciate it.
